In vitro susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to carbenicillin and the combination of carbenicillin and gentamicin.

چکیده
One hundred and eleven strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from clinical material were studied for susceptibility to carbenicillin. Of the strains, 80% were inhibited by 125 mug/ml or more. The combination of carbenicillin and gentamicin was shown to have inhibitory and bactericidal synergistic effect on 15 of 16 strains of P. aeruginosa tested. There was poor correlation between the single-disc sensitivity method and the tube dilution method.

Activity of newer aminoglycosides and carbenicillin, alone and in combination, against gentamicin-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
The in vitro activity of the aminoglycoside antibiotics tobramycin, sisomicin, amikacin, gentamicin, and netilmicin (SCH 20569) were compared against 26 gentamicin-resistant isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa cultured from hospitalized children. Tobramycin had the greatest activity on a weight basis, followed by sisomicin, gentamicin, amikacin, and netilmicin. All isolates were resistant to ach...
متن کاملComparison of the in vitro activity of BL-P1654 with gentamicin and carbenicillin against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
The in vitro activity of 6-[d-alpha-(3 guanylureido)-phenylacetamido]-penicillanic acid (BL-P1654) was evaluated against 117 clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, many of which were known to be resistant to both gentamicin and carbenicillin. BL-P1654 was two to eight times more active than carbenicillin against P. aeruginosa. However, all 28 highly carbenicillin-resistant isolates (minim...
متن کاملSusceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to tobramycin or gentamicin alone and combined with carbenicillin.
To explore more effective therapy for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 264 recent clinical isolates were tested by agar dilution using gentamicin and tobramycin alone and combined with carbenicillin to seek synergistic effects. Synergism was defined as a fourfold or greater decrease in the minimal inhibitory concentration of each drug in a pair. At a concentration of 3.12 mug/ml, gentamicin inhibited 73...
متن کاملIn vitro Evaluation of Methylxanthines and Some Antibiotics: Interaction against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Background: The development of resistance to antimicrobial agents is a major problem in chemotherapy. Finding agents which potentiate antimicrobial activity could be favorable. There are some reports that methylxanthines changed the inhibitory effect of antibacterial agents. Thus, possible synergistic effect of methylxanthines, aminophylline and caffeine on some antibiotics, carbenicillin, ceft...
متن کاملIn vitro effects of carbenicillin combined with gentamicin or polymyxin B against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Disodium carbenicillin and gentamicin sulfate have both shown promise in the treatment of infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This study was designed to explore possible synergistic relationships among the new as well as the established antimicrobial agents used to treat such infections. With an agar dilution technique, minimum inhibitory concentrations of 27 strains of P. aeruginosa w...
